Purpose. It’s defined as:
The reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists.
Yet for the clients I serve, it’s much more than that. For them, their company’s purpose is the heart and soul of the team. It lives and breathes in everyone, enabling them to perform at their best doing exactly what they love to do each and every day.
We’re hearing a lot about purpose-driven businesses these days as CEO’s begin to openly embrace the concept of purpose beyond profit resulting in increased employee engagement and a refined commitment to the better of their communities. I help mid-size businesses uncover and amplify their purpose.
I do this by asking reflective questions including:
- Why does your company exist?
- Who do you serve?
- What are your values?
These answers are not derived from a singular one-on-one meeting with the CEO and then mandated downward – that is a recipe for disaster. The key to executing a newly-discovered or refined purpose and mission is to involve everyone. Each employee has valuable input to the above questions. Why? Because they are in the trenches every day working with customers, vendors, operations, marketing, and a host of other stakeholders that the folks at the top may not interact with on a regular basis.
I’ve led many companies through this process and each time the results are astounding. The vigor with which they embrace each step is inspiring because they see how their passion and love of their businesses can make a real difference in the world.
And isn’t that what everyone wants? To make the world better?
